    Editing, Variations & Image-to-Image

From the course Midjourney for Beginners: Create Stunning AI Art

Midjourney v7 introduced powerful editing features that let you refine images after generation.

    Vary Region (Inpainting)

Select a specific area of a generated image and re-generate just that section. This is incredibly useful for:

    • Fixing hands or faces that don't look right
    • Changing specific elements (swap a red car for a blue one)
    • Adding or removing objects from a scene
    • Refining details without regenerating the entire image

    Upscaling

After generating, upscale your favorite result:

    • 2x Upscale — Double the resolution for web use
    • 4x Upscale — Quadruple resolution for prints and large displays

    Image-to-Image Prompting

Use an existing image as a reference by pasting an image URL at the start of your prompt:

"https://example.com/reference.jpg a forest scene in this color palette --iw 0.5"

The --iw (image weight) parameter controls how much influence the reference image has:

    • --iw 0.5 — Light influence (color palette or general mood)
    • --iw 1 — Moderate influence
    • --iw 2 — Strong influence (closely matches the reference)

    Remix Mode

Remix lets you change your prompt while keeping the general composition of an existing result. Enable it in settings, then click "Vary" on any image. You'll get a prompt box where you can modify the description while maintaining the layout.

    Pan and Zoom

Extend your image beyond its original borders:

    • Pan — Expand the image in any direction (left, right, up, down) to reveal more of the scene
    • Zoom Out — Pull back to show a wider view while keeping the original image centered

These tools let you build expansive scenes from a single starting image.

    Key Takeaways

    • •Vary Region lets you regenerate specific parts of an image
    • •Upscale to 2x or 4x resolution for different use cases
    • •Image-to-image prompting uses reference images with --iw weight control
    • •Remix mode changes the prompt while keeping composition
    • •Pan and Zoom extend images beyond their original borders
