    Parameters and Settings

From the course Midjourney for Beginners: Create Stunning AI Art

Midjourney parameters give you precise control over your generations. Add them to the end of your prompt with a double dash (--).

    Aspect Ratio (--ar)

Control the shape of your image:

    • --ar 1:1 — Square (default). Great for profile pictures and social media posts.
    • --ar 16:9 — Widescreen. Perfect for desktop wallpapers, YouTube thumbnails, and presentations.
    • --ar 9:16 — Vertical. Ideal for phone wallpapers, Instagram stories, and Pinterest.
    • --ar 3:2 — Classic photo ratio. Good for prints and traditional compositions.
    • --ar 21:9 — Ultra-wide. Cinematic banners and panoramic scenes.

Example: "a cyberpunk city skyline at night --ar 16:9"

    Stylize (--s)

Controls how "artistic" Midjourney makes the image:

    • --s 0 — Minimal artistic interpretation; follows your prompt literally
    • --s 100 — Default balance of creativity and prompt adherence
    • --s 250 — Highly stylized; Midjourney takes more creative liberty
    • --s 750 — Maximum artistic interpretation

    Chaos (--c)

Controls how varied the four initial results are:

    • --c 0 — All four results look similar
    • --c 50 — Moderate variation (default)
    • --c 100 — Maximum variety; wildly different interpretations

Use high chaos when exploring ideas, low chaos when you know exactly what you want.

    Quality (--q)

Controls rendering quality and generation time:

    • --q .25 — Rough draft, fastest
    • --q .5 — Less detail, faster
    • --q 1 — Default quality
    • --q 2 — Higher detail, uses more GPU time

    Negative Prompting (--no)

    Exclude elements from your image:

    • "--no text" — Removes text/lettering
    • "--no people" — Removes human figures
    • "--no watermark" — Removes watermark-like artifacts

Example: "a peaceful beach scene --no people --no text --ar 16:9"

    Seed (--seed)

Use a seed number to reproduce similar results. If you like a composition but want to tweak colors or style, keep the same seed and modify the prompt.

    Key Takeaways

    • •--ar controls aspect ratio (1:1, 16:9, 9:16, etc.)
    • •--s (stylize) adjusts artistic interpretation from literal to highly creative
    • •--c (chaos) controls variety between the four generated results
    • •--no lets you exclude unwanted elements from the image
    • •--seed reproduces similar compositions for iterative refinement
