    Whisper

    Whisper is an automatic speech recognition (ASR) model developed by OpenAI and released as open-source in 2022. It was trained on 680,000 hours of multilingual audio scraped from the internet, which gives it robust performance across accents, background noise, and approximately 100 languages without requiring language-specific fine-tuning. Architecturally, Whisper follows an encoder-decoder Transformer design: the audio is converted into a log-Mel spectrogram, encoded into a sequence of representations, and then decoded into text tokens autoregressively.

    Think of it like a highly experienced court reporter who has sat through thousands of hearings in dozens of countries. Because they have heard so many different speakers, accents, and acoustic environments, they rarely need the speaker to slow down or repeat themselves — their breadth of exposure is itself the source of their reliability.

    Running Whisper locally takes just a few lines:

    import whisper
    model = whisper.load_model("large-v3")
    result = model.transcribe("interview.mp3", language="en")
    print(result["text"])

    The model returns a full transcript with optional word-level timestamps. Faster inference wrappers like faster-whisper use CTranslate2 under the hood to cut runtime by 2–4× on the same hardware.

    Whisper's architecture connects it to the Transformer and Tokenization concepts central to modern NLP; its multilingual capability illustrates Zero-Shot generalisation across languages seen during Pretraining. Inference speed is the dominant practical concern, and Quantization is commonly applied to run it efficiently on CPUs or edge devices.

    You will encounter Whisper in podcast transcription tools, meeting-note services, real-time captioning pipelines, and as the ASR backbone feeding text into downstream language model workflows.
