Vision Language Model
A Vision Language Model (VLM) is an AI system that jointly processes visual inputs — photographs, screenshots, diagrams, document scans — and natural language, enabling tasks that require reasoning across both modalities simultaneously. Architecturally, a VLM typically combines a vision encoder (often a contrastive or transformer-based image model) with a large language model, connected by a projection layer that maps image features into the token space the language model understands. This unified representation allows the model to answer questions about images, generate captions, extract structured data from charts, and follow visually grounded instructions.
Think of it like hiring a consultant who can read a report and look at the accompanying graphs at the same time, correlating numbers in the text with trends visible in the charts rather than treating them as separate documents. The consultant's value comes precisely from the ability to switch attention between modalities within a single train of thought.
A common use case is document understanding. Given a scanned invoice, a VLM can extract fields without OCR pre-processing:
response = client.chat.completions.create(
model="gpt-4o",
messages=[{
"role": "user",
"content": [
{"type": "image_url", "image_url": {"url": invoice_base64_url}},
{"type": "text", "text": "Extract vendor name, total amount, and due date as JSON."}
]
}]
)
The model returns structured data directly from the visual content without a separate OCR pipeline.
VLMs build on Multimodal AI principles and depend on Embedding techniques to align visual and textual representations; Attention mechanisms — particularly Self-Attention — allow the model to relate image patches to words. Fine-tuning on task-specific image–text pairs is often used to specialise a general VLM for domains like medical imaging or satellite analysis.
You will encounter VLMs in products that need to understand screenshots, forms, diagrams, or any content where meaning is distributed across text and images together.
