    Hugging Face

Hugging Face is an AI company and open-source platform that functions as the central hub for sharing, discovering, and deploying machine learning models, datasets, and applications. Founded in 2016 and initially known for a chatbot app, it pivoted to become the de facto repository for the research community — hosting over 900,000 public models as of 2025, spanning language, vision, audio, and multimodal tasks. Its core infrastructure includes the Model Hub (versioned model weights with model cards), the Datasets library, and the Transformers Python library, which provides a unified API for loading and running models from dozens of different architecture families.

Think of it like GitHub combined with a package registry, but specifically for AI artifacts: researchers push trained weights the way developers push code, and practitioners pull those weights into their own projects with a single function call.

A typical workflow looks like this: a developer wants to run sentiment analysis without training from scratch, so they call from transformers import pipeline; classifier = pipeline("sentiment-analysis", model="distilbert-base-uncased-finetuned-sst-2-english") — Hugging Face downloads the weights, caches them locally, and returns a ready-to-use inference function. Hugging Face Spaces allows researchers to ship interactive demos (often built with Gradio or Streamlit) that run directly in the browser, making it straightforward to test a model without writing any code.

Hugging Face is the practical distribution layer for Fine-tuning workflows, Knowledge Distillation experiments, and LoRA adapter sharing; it also hosts the Inference API that lets developers call hosted models via REST without managing GPU infrastructure. The platform's model cards standardize documentation of training data, evaluation results, and known biases.

You will encounter Hugging Face in virtually every open-source LLM tutorial, in research papers that release model weights publicly, and whenever a team needs to benchmark a Foundation Model against community baselines.
