Subject & Scene Building
From the course Prompt Engineering for Images: Master AI Art Generation
Creating compelling subjects and scenes requires thinking like a director. This lesson covers techniques for building rich, detailed visual narratives.
Character Description Framework
When generating people or characters:
- Physical traits — Age, build, hair, distinguishing features
- Expression/emotion — "Determined gaze," "gentle smile," "contemplative expression"
- Clothing — Be specific about materials, colors, and style
- Pose/gesture — "Arms crossed," "reaching toward the light," "mid-stride"
Example: "A weathered fisherman in his 60s, deep laugh lines, wearing a faded blue cable-knit sweater, mending nets on a wooden dock, warm afternoon light"
Environment Building
Create rich environments with layers:
- Foreground — Immediate objects near the viewer
- Midground — Main subject area
- Background — Distant elements and atmosphere
- Atmosphere — Weather, time of day, mood
Example: "Foreground: scattered autumn leaves and a worn leather journal. Midground: a wooden bench under an ancient oak tree. Background: a misty lake with mountains. Atmosphere: early morning fog, golden light piercing through"
Scale and Perspective
- "Miniature / tilt-shift" — Makes scenes look like tiny models
- "Epic scale" — Vast, overwhelming landscapes
- "Intimate close-up" — Personal, detailed view
- "Aerial perspective" — Birds-eye overview
Action and Motion
Conveying movement in still images:
- "Motion blur on the wheels"
- "Hair flowing in the wind"
- "Frozen mid-leap"
- "Long exposure light trails"
- "Splashing water droplets frozen in time"
Multiple Subjects
When including multiple characters or objects:
- Specify spatial relationships: "standing side by side," "one in foreground, one in background"
- Define interactions: "shaking hands," "passing a book," "looking at each other"
- Use relative sizing: "a tiny fairy sitting on a giant's shoulder"
Storytelling Through Details
The best AI art tells a story. Add narrative details:
"An astronaut sitting alone in a diner on Mars, helmet on the counter, coffee cup in hand, looking out the window at a rust-red landscape, other tables empty, jukebox glowing in the corner, nostalgic and melancholic mood"
Every detail — the empty tables, the helmet on the counter, the jukebox — adds to the story without needing words.
Key Takeaways
- •Describe characters with physical traits, expression, clothing, and pose
- •Build environments in layers: foreground, midground, background, atmosphere
- •Use scale and perspective keywords to control the viewer's relationship to the scene
- •Add narrative details to tell stories through visual elements
