Prompt Templates & Reusable Patterns
From the course Advanced Prompt Engineering: Master AI Communication
Production prompt engineering requires reusable, parameterized templates — not one-off prompts crafted from scratch each time.
What is a Prompt Template?
A prompt template is a prompt with variables (placeholders) that get filled in at runtime. Instead of writing a new prompt for every customer email, you write one template:
"Write a {{tone}} response to a customer who {{situation}}. The customer's name is {{name}}. Our policy is: {{policy}}. Keep the response under {{max_words}} words."
Building a Template Library
Organize templates by category:
Analysis Templates:
- Competitive analysis: "Analyze {{company}} vs {{competitors}} across: {{dimensions}}. Return a markdown table."
- Document review: "Review this {{document_type}} for {{criteria}}. Flag issues as High/Medium/Low severity."
- Data interpretation: "Given this {{data_type}}: {{data}}, identify {{what_to_find}}."
Content Templates:
- Blog post: "Write a {{length}}-word blog post about {{topic}} for {{audience}}. Tone: {{tone}}. Include: {{required_sections}}."
- Social media: "Create {{count}} {{platform}} posts about {{topic}}. Include hashtags. Tone: {{tone}}."
- Email: "Draft a {{email_type}} email to {{recipient_role}} regarding {{subject}}. Key points: {{points}}."
Code Templates:
- Code review: "Review this {{language}} code for: bugs, performance issues, security vulnerabilities, and adherence to {{standards}}."
- Implementation: "Implement a {{feature}} in {{language}} using {{framework}}. Requirements: {{requirements}}. Follow the pattern in {{reference_file}}."
Template Variables Best Practices
- Use descriptive variable names: {{customer_sentiment}} not {{x}}
- Include type hints: {{rating: 1-5}} or {{format: json|csv|markdown}}
- Set defaults: {{tone: professional}} — use professional if not specified
- Add constraints: {{max_words: 200}} — always specify limits
The Meta-Prompt Pattern
Use AI to generate prompts:
"I need a prompt template for {{task_description}}. The template should:
- Include clear variable placeholders with descriptions
- Specify the output format
- Include 2 example outputs
- Handle edge cases gracefully Generate the complete template."
This is incredibly powerful for building your template library quickly.
Version Control for Templates
Store templates like code:
- Use a structured format (YAML, JSON, or Markdown)
- Include metadata: version, author, last_tested, success_rate
- Tag templates with models they've been validated on
- Track changes and performance metrics over time
Key Takeaways
- •Prompt templates use variables to create reusable, parameterized prompts
- •Organize templates by category: analysis, content, code, and more
- •Use descriptive variable names with type hints and default values
- •Use the meta-prompt pattern: AI generates prompt templates for you
- •Version control templates with metadata, model tags, and performance metrics
