    Collections & Organizing Research

From the course Perplexity AI: Research & Search Mastery

Collections in Perplexity are like smart folders for your research. They let you organize searches by project, topic, or goal — and you can share them with collaborators.

    Creating Collections

    1. Click "Library" in the left sidebar
    2. Click "New Collection"
    3. Give it a name and optional description
    4. Optionally set a custom AI prompt that applies to all searches within this collection

    Custom Collection Prompts

This is a powerful feature. When you set a custom prompt on a collection, every search within it is filtered through that lens. Examples:

    • Research collection: "Always include methodology details and sample sizes when citing studies"
    • Competitor analysis: "Focus on pricing, market share, and recent product launches"
    • Learning collection: "Explain concepts as if I'm a computer science undergraduate"

    Using Collections Effectively

Organize by project or research question:

    • "Q1 Marketing Research" — All searches related to Q1 campaign planning
    • "AI Startup Landscape" — Competitor research, market sizing, funding trends
    • "Thesis Literature Review" — Academic papers and sources for your thesis
    • "Product Launch Checklist" — Research on launch strategies, PR, and go-to-market

    Sharing & Collaboration

Collections can be shared via link. Team members can view the research, see all sources, and add their own searches. This makes Perplexity excellent for collaborative research projects.

    Search History & Library

Even outside of collections, Perplexity saves your search history in the Library. You can:

    • Search through past queries
    • Revisit and continue previous research threads
    • Star important searches for quick access
    • Delete searches you no longer need

    Threads vs. New Searches

Within a collection (or any search), you can ask follow-up questions to dive deeper. Perplexity maintains context within a thread, so each follow-up builds on previous answers. Start a new thread when switching to a different sub-topic.

    Key Takeaways

    • •Collections organize searches by project or topic with optional custom AI prompts
    • •Custom prompts on collections filter all searches through a specific lens
    • •Collections can be shared via link for collaborative research
    • •Use threads for follow-up questions; new threads for new sub-topics
