    Understanding the Model Context Protocol

From the course MCP & AI Tool Integration: Connect AI to Everything

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is the most important AI infrastructure development of 2025-2026. Created by Anthropic and now adopted across the industry, MCP provides a universal standard for connecting AI models to external tools, data sources, and services.

    The Problem MCP Solves

Before MCP, every AI integration was custom:

    • OpenAI had function calling with one format
    • Anthropic had tool use with another format
    • Google had yet another approach
    • Every API connection required custom code

This meant building an AI agent that uses 10 tools required 10 different integrations. MCP standardizes this into a single protocol.

    How MCP Works

    MCP follows a client-server architecture:

    • MCP Host — The AI application (Claude Desktop, Cursor, your custom app)
    • MCP Client — Manages connections between the host and servers
    • MCP Server — Exposes tools, resources, and prompts to the AI

    The communication flow:

    1. AI host connects to MCP servers
    2. Servers advertise their available tools (e.g., "read_file", "query_database")
    3. AI calls tools as needed during conversations
    4. Servers execute the tool and return results
    5. AI uses results to formulate its response

    Key Concepts

    • Tools — Functions the AI can call (e.g., search the web, query a database, send an email)
    • Resources — Data the AI can read (e.g., files, database records, API responses)
    • Prompts — Pre-defined prompt templates that servers can offer

    Why MCP Matters

    • Universal compatibility — Write once, use with any MCP-compatible AI
    • Security — Standardized permission model for tool access
    • Composability — Mix and match tools from different servers
    • Open source — No vendor lock-in, community-driven ecosystem

    The MCP Ecosystem in 2026

Thousands of MCP servers exist for:

    • File systems, databases, and cloud storage
    • GitHub, GitLab, Jira, Linear
    • Slack, Discord, email
    • Web browsing and search
    • Payment processing (Stripe)
    • CRM systems (Salesforce, HubSpot)

    Key Takeaways

    • •MCP is a universal protocol for connecting AI models to tools and data sources
    • •It replaces custom integrations with a standardized client-server architecture
    • •Key concepts: Tools (functions), Resources (data), and Prompts (templates)
    • •MCP is open source, vendor-neutral, and adopted across the AI industry
    • •Thousands of pre-built MCP servers exist for popular services and APIs
