Your First Conversation
From the course ChatGPT for Beginners: Complete Guide 2026
Once you're logged in, you'll see a clean interface with a text input box at the bottom. This is where you type your messages — called "prompts" — to ChatGPT.
Starting a Conversation
Simply type something and press Enter. For example:
"What are the three largest oceans in the world?"
ChatGPT will respond with a clear, well-structured answer. You can then ask follow-up questions in the same conversation, and it will remember the context.
Understanding the Interface
- Chat history (left sidebar) — All your previous conversations are saved here. You can rename, delete, or search through them.
- New chat button — Starts a fresh conversation with no prior context.
- Model selector — At the top of a new chat, you can choose which model to use (GPT-4o, GPT-5, etc.).
- Attach files — You can upload images, documents, PDFs, and spreadsheets for ChatGPT to analyze.
Conversation Threads
Each conversation is a "thread" where ChatGPT remembers everything said so far. This is incredibly powerful for iterating on ideas:
- Ask an initial question
- Refine the answer by asking follow-ups
- Request changes like "make it shorter" or "add more detail"
- Continue building on previous responses
Important: Context Window
ChatGPT can only "remember" a certain amount of text within a single conversation (called the context window). For GPT-4o, this is about 128,000 tokens (~96,000 words). For GPT-5, it's even larger. If a conversation gets very long, older messages may start to drop out of context.
Try It Now
Open ChatGPT and try these starter prompts:
- "Explain quantum computing like I'm 10 years old"
- "Write a haiku about coffee"
- "What's the difference between machine learning and deep learning?"
Key Takeaways
- •Type your prompt in the text box and press Enter to start
- •ChatGPT remembers context within a conversation thread
- •You can upload files, choose models, and search chat history
- •The context window limits how much text ChatGPT can remember at once
